He was born on November 10, 1944 in El Paso, Texas, and graduated from North Highlands High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Viet Nam from 1963 to 1971, and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargeant. During his military service he was married to Anna Garrison in 1967. Following his discharge they moved to Rio Vista, and then to Stockton in 1974. He was a University of Pacific Alumni, graduating in 1976 with his BA degree in teaching. He dedicated his life to teaching, especially needy and at-risk youth in San Joaquin County. For thirty years he taught with San Joaquin County Alternative One Programs, and was scheduled for retirement in a few weeks. He enjoyed camping, fishing, sailing, traveling, golfing and music. He is survived by his wife, Anna Martin of Stockton; daughter, Michelle Ann Martin of Stockton, son, Henry W. Martin, Jr., of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Nicole Horn and David Horn of Stockton; ten siblings; Jackie, Jerry, Mickey, Michael, Danny, Delbert, Tina, Cynthia, Patsy, and Maggie. He was preceded in death by his parents; Harold and Clementina (Cortez) Downey and two siblings; Harold, Jr., and Charles. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. in the U.O.P. Morris Chapel, 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton. Committal will follow in Cherokee Memorial Park. Lodi. Father James Booth will officiate, assisted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 26th 1:00-8:00 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way near Beckman Road in Lodi.
