Taft Feb. 17, 1916 - Sept. 9, 2004 Callie S. Taft, 88, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2004, in Stockton, CA. Born February 17, 1916 in Danville, Arkansas, Mrs. Taft was a resident of Stockton for over 30 years. She was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Elkhorn Country Club. She was a past Captain of the ladies 18-hole group. Mrs. Taft was also a member of the Philomathean Club and affiliated with Sister Cities. She loved traveling and playing bridge and dominoes. Mrs. Taft earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma. She also attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1939, she began her teaching career at Centerview High School in Prague, Oklahoma, where she taught home economics and history. She was principal of the 7th and 8th grades at Ringgold School in Clarksville, Tennessee from 1943-1944. At Prague High School in Prague, OK, she taught Junior High and High School History from 1945-1946. She then spent ten years in the motel business in Tucumcari, New Mexico, where she was able to visit with and entertain people from all over the world. In 1958, after selling the motel business, she took a five-month around-the-world cruise, including two months touring Europe. She traveled extensively throughout her life. In 1964, she returned to teaching history and physical education at Tracy High School. Mrs. Taft is preceded in death by her husband, Perry H. Taft, who was Assistant City Attorney from 1973-1979. She is also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her nieces, Linda Longacor of Oakdale and Loretta Sazama of Stockton; step-children, Stephen Taft of Hayward, CA, Sarah Taft of Atlanta, GA and Sheila Barnes of Redding, CA; granddaughter, Kellyn Barnes; brother, Herbert Haston of OK; sister, Ruby Abel of AR, Rea Webb of Texas and 11 nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at Park View Cemetery, 3661 E. French Camp Road, Manteca, CA.
