He was the son of Milo and Netti DeCarli and the brother of Dean DeCarli and the late Carlotta Delucchi. Born in Ferndale in 1906, he spent his first years in Oakland, where his father was an attorney. Following the death of his mother in 1917, he moved to Roberts Island where he lived for more than 80 years. As a teenager, he worked as a cowboy for the famed Miller and Lux land barons and cattle kings of late 19th and early 20th century fame. He recalled rounding up wild horses in Nevada, and driving herds of cattle between San Jose and Los Banos along the road that is now Highway 101. He became a professional boxer in 1925 and for the next four years his action-packed prizefights were highlighted in the Sports section of the Stockton Record. He worked as a dairyman for his uncle, John DeCarli with whom he developed the milking parlor. Later, he operated his own dairy. In 1994, he and his wife Mabel retired to Stockton to be closer to Oak Park Senior Center where they had been active participants for many years.
