She passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2004. As a young girl she rode her horse across the countryside to attend a one room school house, grades one through eight. Maxine was orphaned at the age of twelve. She was raised by an aunt who was a seamstress and taught her to sew. During high school Maxine worked in a drugstore earning her board and room, which was a tiny attic bedroom. The family who owned the drugstore loaned her the money to attend college. She became a registered nurse and completed advance training in anesthesia. Maxine put her skills to work in the U.S. Army. She served for seven years in North Africa and Italy until the end of World War II. As a First Lieutenant, she worked in surgery in evacuation hospitals (tents). Original Army documents revealed that the supplies she was issued during these assignments were as follows: 1 roll, bedding, waterproof; 1 blanket, wool OD; 1 helmet, steel w/liner; 1 trousers, HBT; 1 leggings, canvas; 1 belt, pistol; 1 cover, canteen; 1 packet first aid & pouch; 1 suspenders, belt. Born Farrell "Maxine" Lykins, Maxine returned to the states after the war. She married Ellis Fabra King and devoted the rest of her life to her family, her church, her garden with some bridge and dancing added to the mix. She was a reserved and compassionate person who identified strongly with the struggles of others. She loved people, especially children, she loved animals and flowers. Her positive outlook on life and her consistent optimistic stance were infectious. She was an excellent listener and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her. Maxine King is survived by her four children, Louise Mary King-Bassett of Lodi, Linda Nanette King of Texas, Lawrence Ellis King of Pala Cedro and Leonard Wilson King of Elk Grove. She is also also survived by her grandchildren, Shannon Louise Chew, Jared Duke Tikker, Brieana King Sarvis, Justin King Sarvis, Joshua Lawrence King, Jason Lee King, Jeremy Leonard King, Jessica Louise King, Christopher Vincent Kondranske and Andrew George Kondranske. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Alyssa Caballero Tikker, Julia Caballero Tikker, Jared Duke Tikker, Jr., Cade Thomas Chew, and Kyle Philip Chew. She was preceded in death by three years, her husband of fifty-two years, Ellis Fabra King. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, September 27, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 9862 N. Davis Rd., Stockton, CA 95209, Pastor Redeen presiding. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church or Hospice of San Joaquin in her honor.
