She was born in Harvey, Illinois to Annabel and Rev. Thamer Waldo Simer, (who ministered to the first integrated church in Illinois, and marched with Dr. King in Selma). Audree was educated rthern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, taught High School English in Vermont, then married James O'Connell and subsequently moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Active in music throughout her life, she shared her exquisite alto voice in many genres, including oratorio, opera, musical theatre, church music, jazz and ballads. She also traveled in America and Europe with choral groups. Audree served as the Choir Director at the Unitarian Universalist Churches of Rockville, Maryland and Stockton, California. After a divorce and raising three children, at the age of forty-six she moved to California to earn a Master's degree in Music Therapy. She became a Professor of Music Therapy in the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, where she was a much-loved and inspiring mentor and colleague for twenty-one years. There she received many honors, including the United Methodist Scholar/Teacher Award and the prestigious Order of the Pacific. Audree had a deep love of literature, philosophy, art and travel, as well as a strong and generous commitment to peace and social justice. Survivors include her sons Daniel (Bonnie), Brian (Tracie), and daughter Erin (Marianne), sisters Betty, Sandra, and brother Scott, three grandchildren, and many other relatives and dear friends, all of whom she cherished. Memorial donations may be made to the Audree O'Connell Endowment for Graduate Scholarship in Music Therapy. (Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific, 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA, 95211). Audree's ashes will be scattered in Ireland, Paris, and Illinois. A Celebration of Audree's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at the Morris Chapel on the University of the Pacific campus, Stockton, CA.
