Mr. Kitagawa was born and raised in Stockton, where he lived most of his life. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Stockton High School. During his youth, he worked in the asparagus fields at Union Island. At the onset of WWII, his family moved to Rohwer, Arkansas. Mr. Kitagawa worked at a paper mill in Chicago before being drafted into the Army. After graduating from basic training, he attended Military Intelligence Language School in Minneapolis, MN. By the time of his graduation, the war had ended and he was sent to Japan as part of the Allied Occupational Forces. After his military service he returned to Stockton and met his future wife Nazuko. They were married in 1949 and made their home in Stockton, where they owned and operated Jack's Food Center, a retail grocery store, until his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed fishing and going to horse races. Mr. Kitagawa is survived by his son, Lon Keiji Kitagawa of Stockton, and daughter, Tina Reiko Yee of Davis; 4 grandchildren, Rick and Mark "Nick" Kitagawa, and Curtis and Wesley Yee; 3 sisters, Fumiye Iwamura, Helen Oshiro and Yuri Kitagawa; 3 brothers, Tom, George and Dennis Kitagawa; and several other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nazuko Kitagawa in 2001. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the Stockton Buddhist Temple, 2820 Shimizu Drive in Stockton. Interment will be private.
