Murphy April 3, 1941 - October 2, 2004 Carole A. Murphy, 63, passed away October 2, 2004, in Belmont, CA, after a ten year battle with corticobasal degeneration. She was born April 3, 1941 in Milwaukee, WI. Deeply loved mother of Mike and Brian Morearty -- after their birth, identical twins became her "favorite life form". Loving grandmother of Rosey, Nicholas, Paulina and Maria Morearty and another granddaughter due to arrive Monday. Survived by her brothers and sisters-in- law, Pat, Marlies, Don, John and Mary Murphy. The perfect mother-in-law to Kathleen Morearty and Margaret Morearty. Remembered by so many for her caring, her sense of humor, her quick laugh and her intelligence. Carole grew up with her three brothers in Milwaukee and went to Marquette University. After she married John Morearty they moved to Chicago, where they had twin sons. She carried nearly 15 pounds worth of baby and could balance a dinner plate on her stomach. In 1967 the family moved to Stockton, CA. After a divorce in 1974, Carole got a Masters in Social Work at California State University at Sacramento. She was inspired by helping people work through problems. After graduating she created the Medical Social Work Department at Dameron Hospital in Stockton. In 1978 Carole moved with her sons to San Rafael. She continued working as a social worker and lived there nearly 20 years. Eventually her oncoming dementia made working impossible. After two years in San Francisco she moved to Palo Alto, closer to some old friends and one son and daughter-in-law. She met Peter Colley, who became a dear friend and travel companion. Some of Carole's favorite things were children; nature and flowers; going for walks, gardening, good food and dessert (you knew she liked it if her eyes rolled), laughing with friends in the back yard on warm summer evenings, curling up with a good book, crying at foreign films, discussing liberal politics and feminism, traveling with friends and music. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2004, 1:00 p.m., at the Mercy Center, 2300 Adeline Dr., Burlingame, CA. Donations may be made to The UCSF Foundation, "In memory of Carole Murphy", Box 0248, San Francisco, CA 94143-0248.
