Ed, as he was known to his many friends, died in Stockton, the day after suffering a massive stroke. He was born in Stockton, the loving son of the late Dr. and Mrs. George Sanderson. He graduated from El Dorado Grammar School and Stockton High School before attending Stanford University. His study there was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he attained the grade of Lieutenant Junior Grade. While stationed in the Philippines, he contracted poliomyelitis and was evacuated to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Mare Island. His initial paralysis was severe, but after treatment for a year or so, he was able to return to his University studies and ultimately graduated from Stanford Law School in 1952. After passing the Bar examination, he became an attorney for the Franchise Tax Board in San Francisco. Ed served on the Board of Directors of the Mechanics Bank for over 25 years becoming an Emeritus member in 2002. He was also on the Board of Cere- bral Palsy Association. Other affiliations included membership in the World Affairs Council, the Commonwealth Club (where he was a lifetime member) and the English Speaking Union. He belonged to the Bar Association of San Francisco and was a long time member of the Olympic Club, as well as the San Francisco Bible Breakfast Club. After retiring, Ed returned to Stockton where he became an active member of Stockton Beautiful, Haggin Museum, San Joaquin Historical Society, Corral of Westerners, San Joaquin Bar Association, Stockton Opera Association, a major sponsor of St. John's Chamber Orchestra Festival, Children's Home of Stockton, Navy League, Webber Point Coffee Club, Yosemite Club, Rotary Club, as well as, the Marching and Chowder Society. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church and sang in the Choir. Survivors include his sister, Jean Sanderson of Corte Madera, CA; his brother, George Sanderson, Jr. of Soulsbyville, CA and his wife, Judith, and his brother- in- law, David Powell of Half Moon Bay, CA. His beloved sister, Lorna Sanderson Powell predeceased him. Ed's cousins are Brigadier General Alfred "Sandy" Sanderson of Stockton, CA, Georgia Westdahl of San Francisco, CA, and Eric Swanson of San Diego, CA; nieces and nephews include Christopher Rivers of San Francisco, CA, Daisy Powell Andersen of Seattle, WA, Annika Powell Paradise of Nederland, CO, Steven and Jonathon Sander- son of Denver, CO, Rebecca Sanderson Delgado of Martinez, CA, Gwen Sanderson of San Francisco, CA and Laurie Sander- son Walcott of Lakewood, CO. Ed will also be missed by his dear friends, Yvonne Brown and Dr. William Latham of Stockton, CA, Guang Xu of Palo Alto, CA, Zaijie Wang of Chicago, IL and their families, Dolores Cisneros, Michael Almonia and Ron Ross all of Stockton. A Memorial Service to celebrate Ed's life will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, corner of El Dorado and Miner Streets, Stockton, CA.
