Gesulga June 3, 1922 - June 2, 2004 Manuel C. Gesulga, 81, passed away in San Francisco, California on June 2, 2004. Born in Hilo, Hawaii June 3, 1922, moving and growing up in Stockton, California. Like many other men at this time, Manuel enlisted into the U.S. Army on December 12, 1941, just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Manuel ultimately volunteered for airborne paratrooper duty and finally ended up with the 101st Airborne Division S-2 section of the 502nd regiment. Manuel made his first combat jump on D-Day, landing just outside of St. Mere Eglise, France. Surviving D-Day he went on to fight in Operation Market Garden in Holland but getting wounded on September 18, 1944, he was shipped off to England for a patch up job. After healing, off to the front he went again, assigned to "I" company, he now headed to Belgium to fight in the now famous Battle of the Bulge. There he was wounded again on January 10, 1945. Again he got patched up and fought to the end of the war. Surviving the war and glad to be alive, Manuel settled in Oakland, California and raised 4 children, Albert Gesulga of Los Angeles, California, Nina Coleen Gesulga of Reno, Nevada, Manuel Gesulga Jr. of Riverside, California, and Taylor Courtland of Las Vegas, Nevada. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004, 12:00 noon at the American Legion, 2020 Plymouth Rd., Stockton.
