Ernest Wesley Bates 

January 28, 1924 - July 16, 2004



Ernest Wesley Bates, 80, of Stockton, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2004 in a 
local convalescent care facility. Born January 28, 1924 in Sequim, WA, he 
taught indus- trial arts in the Stockton Unified School District for 28 years. 
He earned his degrees from the University of Puget Sound, University of 
Washington and University of California at Berkeley. Ernie was a member of Phi 
Mu Alpha, Sinfonia, Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Pi Tau. He held all offices in 
CITEA in San Joaquin County, northern section and the state level. He was the 
class advisor for the Edison High School Class of 1969. Ernie was an active 
tenor soloist throughout his life and a member of the Stockton Chorale. He also 
was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Stockton Covenant Church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joan L. Bates of Stockton. Father of 
Ernest William Bates of TX, Edwin J. (Nancy) Bates and Stephen B. (Wendy) 
Bates, all of Stockton. Grandfather of 6. Brother of Evelyn (Harold) Harrison 
of Yelm, WA. 
Services are Thursday, July 22, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Stockton Covenant 
Church, 1720 Oxford Way, Stockton 95204. Rev. Michael White officiating. Max 
Carroll at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions to either Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific 
Ave., Stockton 95204 or Stockton Covenant Church are preferred.
