Mattice October 22, 1923 - August 4, 2004 William (Bill) F. Mattice, 80, of Lodi, passed away at home on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born on October 22, 1923 in Lodi, CA. and was a descendent from Freeman J. Mattice who settled in this area in 1852. He attended Victor, Bruella and Henderson schools and graduated from Lodi High School in 1942 and then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 - 1945. After his tour of duty he met his wife-to-be in Seattle, WA and they married July 16, 1945 and settled in Lodi, CA. They recently celebrated their 59th anniversary at home with daughter and close friends. He began a career in the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 29 years of service. He enjoyed the outdoors and seeing his daily residents along his delivery routes. After he retired from the postal service, he was employed by Lodi Unified School District for 10 years. He enjoyed cooking and baking his "special cookies" and Sunday waffles for his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and created a beautiful back yard with many bonsai trees, Koi pond and waterfall. He enjoyed cruising and traveling to many countries over the years. He was a member of Merry Makers Dance Club in Stockton, Stockton Elks Lodge #218 and the First Methodist Church of Lodi. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gladys J. Mattice of Lodi. Father of Carol (Darrel) Back of Bonney Lake, WA, and Cindy Brown of Lodi. Grandfather of Bill Brown of Lodi, Kimberly Brown of Rocklin, CA, Melinda Brown of Alexandria, VA and Scott Back of Dyess AFB, TX. Great grandfather of 7. Brother of Jim Mattice of ID, Jack Mattice of Napa, CA and Betty Brown of Lockeford, CA. Memorial Service: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park. Rev. Alan Kimber officiating. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 207 E. Alpine, Stockton, CA 95204 are preferred.
