The passing of his beloved wife of 56 years, Rose M. Vierra, preceded him. Bill was born August 29, 1924 in Stockton, CA. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1942 where he was a yell leader, played saxophone in the school band and played multiple sports. He graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA. Bill was a proud World War II Veteran, having served his Country in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded 5 Bronze Battle Stars and 2 Purple Hearts for his actions in Battle. He was a 38 year Retiree of Caltrans where he held the positions of Design Engineer, Construction Engineer and Traffic Engineer. He was the district 10 representative for the Interstate 5 design for Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, SIRS, the Italian Athletic Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and formed "Lenny's Huddle", a group of retired Caltrans employees that would (and still) meet monthly to socialize. Until recently, he would faithfully call the members (now 60 plus strong) to remind them of the upcoming get-togethers. In the 50's, Bill excelled in the sport of baseball and played semi-pro hardball. He carried on his passion for the sport as a coach in the Pacific Little League where his two sons, Bill and Danny, played. He also devoted thousands of "willing" hours traveling and assisting his daughter, Christine, with her numerous Horse Jumping competitions throughout California. Bill is survived by his three loving children, William S. Vierra, Daniel J. Vierra and Christine D. Brand stad; 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. His genuine smile and warm ways will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The family would like to "thank" Hospice and Bill's caregivers, Peter and Nena, whose compassionate care during his final days was invaluable. Family and friends are invited for a Graveside Service on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 & Harney Ln., Lodi, CA at 3:00 p.m. and to a Memorial Service on Friday, August 20, 2004 in the Morris Chapel of U.O.P., 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA at 12:00 noon. Friends are invited to a reception following the Memorial Service at the home of Jon and Christine Brandstad. The family requests any memorial donations be made to Bill's favorite charity, Disabled American Veterans Dept. of California, 13733 E. Rosecrans Ave., Sante Fe Springs, CA 90670. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
