Richard Gayle Devereaux, M.D. 

January 17, 1928 - August 19, 2004



Richard Gayle Devereaux, M.D., adored husband of Rita, and beloved son of the 
late Harold and Victoria Devereaux, died peacefully in his sleep after a long 
illness on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at the age of 76 years. Gayle was a native 
of Stockton, California until he left to join the Coast Guard. During his 
service as a Hospital Apprentice, he sparked a lifelong interest in medicine 
which ultimately led to a medical degree from U.C.S.F. He further specialized 
in Internal Medicine and Gastroenter-ology before entering practice in San 
Francisco over 40 years ago. He is a Fellow of the American College of 
Gastroenterology, and served as Chief of Staff at Ralph K. Davies Medical 
Center and Associate Professor at U.C.S.F. Gayle remained a caring and 
dedicated father and physician to the end, inspiring strength in those around 
him to reach beyond themselves. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Rita; 
children: Mark & Cathy Devereaux, Dwight & Sharon Devereaux, Richard Devere-
aux, Dianne & David Mitchell, and Chris & Asha Devereaux; and grandchildren: 
Stephen, James Michelle, Brian, Bradley, Melanie, Lindsay, Stephanie, Sabrina, 
and Alex.
Services will be held at St. Hillary's Church in Tiburon, on Saturday, August 
28, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Employee Fund at The 
Redwoods in Mill Valley, c/o Sharon Stinson, or Martin Hospice are welcomed.
