Powell June 19, 1917 - March 12, 2005 Olen J. Powell arrived safely Home with his Lord and Savior, that he dearly loved and served on Saturday, March 12, 2005. Olen was born Tuesday, June 9, 1917 in Fulton County, Arkansas. He was the fourth boy of eleven children, born to Oscar Joshua and Etta Rose Powell. At about age 15, he joined the CCC, working on projects in several states, including Grand Teton National Park and Pinnacles State Park in California. In December 1941 he met Pauline Massey and they were married June 13, 1942. For the next three years Olen served in the United States Air Force with the 14th Air Force, 375th Bomb Squadron, 308th Bomb Group in the China Burma Theatre, during the war to end all wars, WWII. Olen rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was discharges in 1945. Olen and Pauline settled in Michigan after the war. In 1946 their only daughter, Janet, was born in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1947 the little family moved across country to Stockton, CA where in 1948 Olen started with Stockton Unified School District. In 1956 he was promoted to Head Custodian and he opened the brand new John C. Fremont Junior High School in 1957. He always ok'ed that the General Contractor handed him a box with several hundred key, none marked, and said "good luck". He served under several administrators and was honored by students and staff on his retirement in 1982. In retirement Olen enjoyed walking and stopping off to visit with friends like Bob Watson at Casagrandes Deli for coffee and other goodies. He also made many friends while exercising in the water at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi. Olen and Pauline were married 54 years until her passing in 1996. He is survived by his daughter, Janet and her husband, Martin Jones. He is also survived by three sisters, Clara Hopkins of Springfield, Missouri, Bertha Milsap of Merriam, Kansas and Iva Smith of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas; brother- in-law, Sam Massey of Victorville, CA; cousin, Julie Tabangcura of Stockton, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 15, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Service will be Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Wallace Martin Funeral Home, 520 N. Sutter St., Stockton, CA.
