Her entire family, including grandchildren and great grandchildren, was present to witness her "graduation". It was a memorable moment for all. She was born December 7, 1918 to John and Lydia Reitz on a farm near Elgin, Iowa She graduated from Elgin High School in 1936 and worked in a doctor's home for a number of years in Quincy, Illinois. It was there she met Edward R. Hodel. She and Edward were married on August 24, 1940. They moved to Southern California in 1954 where Edward worked at the Diamond Wlnut Company. When the business moved to Stockton, Edward and Mabel relocated to the Lockford area. Mabel was a dedicated full-time mother to her three sons: Eric, Mark and John. What defined Mabel was her unwavering Christian faith through all circumstances. In 1968, her son Mark was killed serving in Vietnam and in 1978, Edward was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident Through it all, her faith only strengthened and she used those experiences to encourage others through organizations such as Bereaved Parents and through daily interaction with anyone who needed encouragement. Mabel was an active member of Vinewood Community Church for almost fifty years.. She was proud of her ability to keep a sharp looking lawn and did the work herself until just recently. She enjoyed entertaining her friends, church activities and donating time at the Delta Blood Bank. She will be greatly missed by all who came in contact with her.
