Salmonson, 91, of Lodi, died Sept. 29 in San Marcos. He was born Jan. 31, 1914, on the family farm in Kelvin, N.D. Mr. Salmonson married Marian Smith in Bottineau in 1940. He joined the Army in 1943. He completed basic training camp at Camp Walters, Texas, and then was sent to Europe and into combat shortly after the Normandy invasion. While in the Army, he served as a combat infantryman with the 30th infantry division in Normandy, across France and Belgium and into Germany, where he was wounded in 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat in Germany and also the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf clusters for meritorious service while with the Lost Battalion at Mortain, France. Following his service, he and his wife moved to Seattle, Wash. In 1953, they relocated to Los Angeles, where they owned and operated a business for many years. They then moved to Vista, where they owned another business until their retirement in 1984. While living in Vista, he and his wife were members of Emanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido. He and his wife's main interest was being involved in the church and they studied the bible with Bible Study Fellowship International for eight years. They enjoyed being able to go the Holy Land, Israel with their church family and two pastors once in 1996 and again in 1999. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling, fishing, and keeping in touch with friends and relatives. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marian Salmonson, of Lodi; daughters, Teresa Mortenson, of Lodi and Paula Marie Vessel, of Fresno; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, 5750 E. Pine St., Lodi.
