Shaw Jr. Jan. 11, 1923 — Oct. 5, 2005 Services will be Wednesday for Tracy native Allen R. Shaw Jr., 82, who died Oct. 5, 2005 in Chico. Mr. Shaw came from a family that mirrors the state’s history. His great- grandfather, Allen Shaw, lured by the gold rush, left his home in Maine and arrived by ship in San Francisco in 1850. Mr. Shaw’s grandfather, Frank, and father, Allen Sr., were railroad engineers for Southern Pacific Railroad and drove their historic locomotives throughout Northern California starting in the early 1890s. Mr. Shaw was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army with the 125th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, and he fought in the European Theater. In recognition of his service to his country, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Shaw lived his life with grace and inner strength. He will be remembered for his loyalty, sense of fair play, defense of the underdog, eloquence, liberal values, humor and unconditional love for his wife and children. Family and friends will remember evenings spent with Mr. Shaw engaging in animated political discussions, playing cards, watching movies, retrieving arcane facts and being in the company of a good man. Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirlee Shaw of Chico; sons, Roger Shaw, and his wife, Susan, of Chico, Mark Shaw, and his wife, Michele, of San Jose, and Tom Shaw, and his wife, Susan, of Concord; daughter, Kitty Sullivan, and her husband, Tim, of the San Diego area; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces, Wanda Gentry and Lucilla Nuce, both of Tracy, and Mary Ann Anderson of Bend, Ore. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eddie Shaw, and sister, Genevieve Darr. Wednesday’s services will begin at 11 a.m. at the Redwood Chapel of Oakmont Mortuary, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, in Lafayette. Visitation will be observed from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
