Previously of Castro Valley, Mr. Southern lived in Manteca 11 years. He was the owner of the Bay Auto Sales in San Leandro. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp three years and fought in the Battles of the Bulge, Normandy and Western Europe. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Castro Valley. He was an excellent mechanic, and he loved to fix things for his family. He was always quick to help anyone in need. His family was very important to him. He will be remembered as a loving father and beloved grandfather and brother. Mr. Southern is survived by his children, John Southern of New Mexico, Lorraine Jolley, and her husband, Jim, of Wyoming, Robert Southern, and his wife, Debbie, of Colorado, James Southern, and his wife, Bev, of Manteca, Barton Southern of Castro Valley, Charles Southern, and his wife, Dawn, of Modesto, and Charlotte Gibbons, and her husband, Mark, of Tracy; siblings, Vera Gastineau of Kansas, Elizabeth Hicks of New Mexico, Celia Sisson of Texas, Edith Hellman of Georgia and John Barton of New Mexico; grandchildren, Ben, Wesley, Heather, Robbie, Aaron, Melinda, Brian, Erin, Chris, Amber, Chase, Cody, Sarah and Tony; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Neal, Amanda, Ashley and Richard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Southern; parents, Charles and Effie Southern; and a sister, Rosa Southern. Monday’s graveside services will begin at 1:30 p.m. at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCabe Road, in Gustine. Visitation will be observed from noon to 5 p.m. today at P.L.
