Born in East St. Louis, Ill., Mr. Strauss played semiprofessional football for the St. Louis Browns before entering into the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He participated in the Berlin Airlift, served in the Korean War and was part of the Atomic Bomb Testing in the Pacific. After leaving the Air Force in 1963, he moved his family to Tracy where he continued to work as a calibration technician for the U.S. government. He left Tracy in 1969 and retired in 1996. He and his wife traveled throughout the world during his retirement, visiting every continent except Antarctica. He was an avid records and books collector and loved being with his grandchildren. Mr. Strauss is survived by his children, Fred L. Strauss of Tracy, Frank Strauss, and his wife, Regina, of Atwater, Michael Strauss, and his wife, Terri, of Fairfield, Tina Madison, and her husband, Vern, of Yorba Linda, Bernadette Waugh, and her husband, Barry, of Plano, Texas; sister, Betty Craig of Cahokia, Ill.; grandchildren, Melissa Strauss of Tracy, Erika Strauss of Sacramento, Fred Strauss of Fairfield, C. William Smith, and his wife, Jackie, of Santa Rosa, Jennifer Eckerman, and her husband, Shane, of Paso Robles, Michelle Mitchell of San Diego, Andrea Strauss of Reno, Nev., Christina Strauss of Reno, Michael Strauss of Washington, Charlie Dye of Plano and Trisha Strauss, who is serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Joann; parents, Fred L. Strauss and Madeline Krug; and sister, Virginia Strauss. Published on Monday, November 14, 2005, in the Tracy Press.
