Smith, age 96, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005 in Stockton. Dorothy was born to Emil and Sophie Nilson on April 3, 1908 in Denver, Colorado. She graduated from Colorado State Teachers College in 1929. She was married to David H. Smith in 1933 and moved with him to Southern California, where he was a career firefighter rising to rank of Assistant Fire Chief in the Santa Ana Fire Department. In California, she continued her education, graduating from Long Beach State College in 1953. Dorothy was a gifted teacher, who dedicated 30 years of her life to teaching elementary children in the Santa Ana Unified School District. Dorothy resided in Santa Ana and Tustin, CA for more than 60 years before moving to O'Connor Woods Retirement Community in Stockton in 1999. She is survived by one son, David Lawrence Smith and his wife, Alberta of Clatskanie, Oregon and two daughters, Delia Margaret Smith and her husband, Tim Conniff of San Jose and Dorrine Helen Davis and her husband, Gent of Stockton. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Erick Smith of Pullman, Washington and Christina Wallace of Tucson, Arizona; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Andrew Wallace and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, David and two brothers, Claude and Gordon Nilson. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
