Smith, 74, of Lodi, died July 18 in his home. He was born Dec. 5, 1930, in Long Beach. Mr. Smith was raised in Salinas and Stockton. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during the Korean Conflict. He married Peggy Tone in 1951 and they made their home in Belmont. In 1972, he and his wife relocated to Mt. Ranch. He worked as a building contractor until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed his work and made friends with many of his clients. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Smith, of Lodi; daughters, Cecelia Stamps, of San Jose, Jenny Smith and Meg Nicolas, both of Stockton, and Amy Deschamps, of Sunnyvale; sons, Michael Smith, of San Carlos, Robert Smith, of Mt. Ranch, and Tim Smith, of Redwood City; sisters, June Polek, of Manteca, Mariann Pomegranite, of El Cerrito, and Jessie Smith, of Manteca; brother, William Smith, of Stockton; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Bobby Smith. A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, Highway 99 and Harney Lane, Lodi. Burial will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 E. Industrial Way, Lodi.
