Spurgin, 85, of Lodi, died April 28 in Lodi. He was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Hebron, Neb., and moved to California in 1923. Mr. Spurgin attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Lodi High School in 1938. From 1838-40, he attended Stockton Jr. College where he received his associate of arts degree. After receiving his degree, he was chosen by the U.S. Naval Flight & Officer School for training. He received his "wings" from Corpus Christi Aviation Training School in Texas. Wayne Spurgin Mr. Spurgin married Virda Taylor on Jan. 24, 1943, in Lodi. During World War II, he flew the TBF Avenger off the USS Sangamon aircraft carrier during the battle of the Pacific. He received numerous medals for combat flights. Following the war, he owned and operated Spurgins ARCO for many years. Mr. Spurgin was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church, SIRS and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, camping and outdoor activities with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virda Spurgin, of Lodi; daughters, Karen Sowers, of Acampo, and Lynn Million, of Chicago; sister, Maxine Acker, of Sacramento; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Wayne in 2003; and sister, Arlene Leach in 2001. A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church, 801 S. Lower Sacramento Road, with Pastor Perry Kallis officiating. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Baptist Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
