Mary Underwood

March 4, 1950 — Nov. 19, 2005 


Memorial services were Nov. 26 for Tracy native Mary Underwood, 55, who died 
Nov. 19,2005, after a battle with soft tissue sarcoma. 

Mrs. Underwood grew up in Tracy, in a home that fostered her love of the 
countryside and nature, reading and intellectual pursuits. She received her 
bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, and her master’s 
degree from Sacramento State University, both in English literature. She 
taught English for the Nevada Union High School District for more than 30 
years, and at Sierra College for almost 10 years. Her greatest joys in life 
were her family, her historic craftsman home, cats, camping, gardens, British 
mystery novels and her students in whom she instilled a desire for growth and 
insight, and the need to reach for something greater. She was extremely proud 
of the achievements of her sons, both college students at University of 
California, Santa Barbara. Those who loved and respected her will remember her 
great wit, adventurous spirit, deep appreciation for truth and beauty, and 
especially her dignity, both in life and death.

Mrs. Underwood is survived by her husband, Marc, of Auburn; and her two sons, 
David Eugene and Matt William.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Lucille Beutler; and her 
brother Neal.

Memorial services were at The United Methodist Church in Grass Valley.

Contributions in Mrs. Underwood’s name may be sent to research being done to 
fight cancer.
