Jefferson B. West 
July 1, 1911 - April 2, 2005



Jefferson B. West, age 93 of Stockton, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2005 
in a local hospital. He was born on July 1, 1911 in Hagerman, New Mexico and 
was 15 years old when he graduated from Hagerman High School. His life was 
devoted to education. Jeff received degrees from Chico State College, the 
University of the Pacific and Stanford University. He held numerous positions 
as an elementary teacher, vice principal, supervisor of elementary and junior 
high school science, director of elementary education, assistant superintendent 
of elementary education and associate superintendent of instruction and was 
also involved with the Head Start program. Jeff retired from Stockton Unified 
School District in 1972. One of his proudest accomplishments was advising 
Gladys Benerd, a well known activist and educator to donate her wealth, 
approximately $11 Million to the University of the Pacific and San Joaquin 
Delta College. Retirement years were spent traveling, photography, wood-working 
and loafing in the plentiful Stockton sunshine, which was his best hobby.
He was the beloved husband of Madge B. West for 72 years. His only son, Samuel 
J. West preceded him in death. Jeff was blessed with 5 adoring grandchildren; 
Mark West of Paradise Valley, AZ, Brian West of Winnetka, CA, Sam West of Menlo 
Park, CA, Sabrina Dobbins of Alachua, FL and John West of Dublin, CA and 6 
great-grandchildren.
Committal will be private and at Jeff's request, no visitation will be held.
Memorial contributions can be made in Jeff's name to American Cancer Society, 
207 E. Alpine Ave., Stockton, CA 95204 or the charity of your choice.
