Basket ball, especially, has been in favor. Basket Ball During the season just passed, Lodi has developed one of the best teams which she has had in several years. In the fall season a large number of boys came out for practice and most of them stayed with the game throughout the season. They practiced most faithfully, and under the able coaching of James Conklin, accomplished great results. During the entire year Lodi lost but two games, only one of these being a league game. The team lined up as follows: Edward Atwood Center Frank Carpenter Forward Irving Neely Forward Sherwood Beckman Guard Ambrose Huberty Guard Waldo Porterfield Substitute Leon Rutherford Forward Howard Remick Forward Raymond Beckman Forward Oran Spotts Guard Nathaniel Adams Substitute Lodi 54, Oakdale 4 October 16 A good crowd of enthusiastic fans turned out for the first game of the season. One feature of the game was the rooting led by Spurgeon who demonstrated well his ability to lead stirring yells. The game from start to finish was full of life, with some roughing and a good many fouls. Oakdale made the first point by a free throw. Lodi soon showed decisively that she had a much better team than Oakdale. At the end of the first half the score stood 24 to 3 in favor of Lodi and at the end of the second half, 54 to 4, Oakdale making only one point in the last half. Throughout the game, Lodi showed especially good team work. Lodi 44, Gait 12 October 30 The second game of the season was played at Galt. The court was a great handicap to the Lodi players, who were accustomed to the regulation court. But despite all disadvantages Lodi put over an easy victory. The Galt men just naturally wouldn't shoot the baskets, but they were game to the end. This was in every way a clean game. The Lodi teams motored up in automobiles and a number of students went up to witness the game and join in the rooting. Lodi 30, Sacramento 17 November 24 Sacramento came to Lodi bringing along a good team. Nevertheless Lodi easily won the game, showing a superiority in both team work and goal shooting. A good, enthusiastic crowd attended the game. Lodi 60, Galt 5 December 3 The second game with Galt at Lodi was an easy victory for the home team. The Lodi boys just played with the Galt team. Lodi showed splendid team work. Lodi 31, Woodland 9 December 10 The game with Woodland was the first league game of the season and naturally there was much excitement in the school before the event. A good crowd turned out, filling the gymnasium to its capacity. From the first shrill whistle until the last, the game was full of excitement and pepper, with never a dull moment. Although Lodi was in the lead throughout and won by the large score of 31 to 9, the Woodland boys played well all the way through. This was a good clean game, and was enjoyed much by the public and by students. James Conklin, former all star player, had been coaching the boys and they showed marked improvement. Lodi 29, Sacramento 14 January 8 The return game at Sacramento was in every way a pleasing event. As in the preceding game the Lodi team had an easy victory. They reported courteous and kind treatment at the hands of the Sacramento boys. Lodi 28, Stockton 16 January 15 On January 15 the Stockton boys came to Lodi and along with the team came two special cars full of students. They made some noise. There has for some time been rather intense rivalry between Stockton and Lodi, and this year proved no exception to the rule. From the moment the game was called until it ended there was not a dull minute. In this game Lodi demonstrated that it had a number one team; for although the Stockton boys outweighed them, they easily had the game from start to finish. At the end of the first half the score stood 14 to 6 in Lodi's favor, a score which ran up to 28 to 16. Lodi 25, Esparto 14 January 21 On Friday the 21st of January our team went to Esparto. This was a long and tiresome trip and our boys had to play on a dance floor court. They did some fancy slides but succeeded in defeating their opponents by a good score. Esparto played a very good game, considering that she is a new aspirant for basket ball honors. Lodi 25, Turlock 34 January 22 The team came back to Lodi from the Esparto game tired and sleepy and the same day piled into autos and drove to Turlock. For the first time during the season they had their colors lowered. This was a good game nevertheless, for Turlock had an excellent team especially marked for fine team work. This was not a league game. Lodi 23, Stockton 22 January 29 The big boys of the Stockton Athletic Club came out one night in January to play us. They had the Lodi boys outweighed and played an excellent game. They led Lodi by a score of 11 to 9 in the first half but in the second half the Lodi boys rallied and won by one point. This game restored their confidence, which had been slightly shaken by the Turlock game. Lodi 33, Turlock 26 February 12 When Turlock came to Lodi for the return game excitement prevailed as Turlock had been the only team to defeat Lodi during the entire season. This proved to be one of the fastest games of the year, but Lodi, much to our delight, won by a good margin. Lodi 24, Stockton 22 February 17 On February 17 Lodi went to Stockton for a return game with the Athletic Club boys. This game also was won by Lodi. The game this time was close, Lodi winning by only two points. Lodi 29, Corning 20 February 26 The game with Corning was the semi-final game for the championship of the northern section. News had come to Lodi that Corning had just defeated Oroville and that she had "some team." A good deal of interest was manifested in the game, and despite the inclement weather, a large crowd turned out. Lodi had the game from the first; nevertheless this was a very good game except for a little rough play. Lodi 19, Berkeley 24 March 17 But one game remained to be played which decided whether the Lodi boys should get the trip to Los Angeles. This was the game with Berkeley and naturally there was a good deal of excitement concerning it. It was one of the best and one of the cleanest games of the season. The game was played under Bay City rules, a condition which, in a way, handicapped our boys, because they were used to playing under more liberal rules. The game was even all the way through. The Lodi boys had the lead by a score of 12 to 11 at the end of the first half and the game seemed to be going in their favor, until the last few minutes, when the Lodi boys lost their heads, and Berkeley made a couple of baskets. This won the game. This was the last big game of the season. Conklin Benefit Game March 25 In order to show their gratitude to Mr. Conklin, for the aid he had rendered in so ably coaching the boys, they arranged a game with the Stockton High School boys who kindly consented to play with us. Things looked bad for Lodi, with Spotts down with the mumps, Beckman ill and Jack lame in one leg. But on the night of the game Beckman showed up, and played as fine a game as ever, while Huberty ably substituted for Spotts and Jack got over his lameness. We had a liberal referee and the game was one scramble from start to finish. True, it lacked some of the pepper of earlier games, but this was made up by the excellent playing as a whole. At the end of the first half the score was a tie. During the last half also it was tied five times and when the whistle blew Lodi was found two points ahead. THE INTERCLASS GAMES Sophomore – Freshman The first of the series of interclass games was played between the Freshmen and Sophomores. Although the Sophomores won the game, the Freshmen surprised every one by their strong opposition. Senior – Junior The next game was between the Juniors and Seniors, a game narrowly won by the latter. Senior – Sophomore The final was played between the Seniors and Sophomores, the latter winning and thereby claiming the basket ball cup for a year.
