Former County Treasurer Answers the Summons He Was One ol the Pioneers of the County and Was Highly Respected by All Who Knew Him (From Thursday's Daily.) Many years have flown since Benjamin Franklin Pettit was actively identified with the political and business history of San Luis Obispo county, yet there are many who have never lost track of the honest, well meaning citizen in the days of life's ebb. The call from above has come to this honored pioneer of the county and many people will learn with saddended hearts of his death. Benjamin Franklin Pettit it died yesterday morning at the home of A. B. Spooner on the Pecho. For years he had been an invalid, suffering with asthma. Deceased was a native of Ohio and had long been a resident of San Luis Obispo county. He leaves a daughter. Mrs. Georgia Thompson, to mourn his death. The funeral will be held today at 2 p. m. with interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery. In the latter eighties B. F. Pettit was one of the most influential men in the ranks of the Republican party of this county. In 1888 he was nominated by the Republicans for County Treasurer and elected by the following vote: B. F. Pettit 1803. Julian Garcia, Democrat 1459 and Frank Swigart, Prohibition, 109. He was renominated by the Republicans for Treasurer in 1890, and was again elected, receiving 1791 votes to 1570 for Phil Kaetzel, Democrat. In 1892 Mr. Pettit refused to allow his name to be presented to the Republican convention and went before the people as an independent candidate on the platform - “No Banks Behind Ben.” He had some words with certain officials of the local banks in reference to deposits of county funds. There were four candidates and the election resulted in favor of E. L. Warner who had the Peoples Party and Prohibition nominations. The vote stood E. L. Waraner 1061, J. B. Kester, Republican 965, J.B. Short Democrat 933, B, F. Pettit, Independent 673. No man ever doubted the honesty and the qualities of good citizenship which were ever coupled with the name of Mr. Pettit. May he rest in peace.
