He is said to have spent over forty thousand dollars on labor and materials for the adobe. He built it as a residence for his family. Today only one wing is still standing. It is occupied by a family of five who find the wing more than spacious. The adobe is constructed in typical adobe fashion. The walls are two feet thick and are made of mud and straw. The original floors were made of imported oak timbers. Walls were approximately ten feet high. The overall dimensions were 80' x 200'. The building was built in a "U" shape with the open courtyard facing south. In one wing were sleeping quarters and the servant's rooms. The other wing had extra rooms and a small chapel. The long corridor housed rooms for formal entertaining.
