It was not until 1900 that John Tognazinni settled in Edna, after several unsuccessful attempts to prosper in other California communities. That year he built a general merchandise store for three thousand dollars. Tognazinni and his wife lived in the back of the store, while his five children, Griseld, Elsie, Guido, Lucea, and Alma lived in a tin shed behind the store. A permanent family house was built behind the store in 1908. This original structure burned to the ground in 1916 at a loss of five thousand dollars. It was replaced with an exact replica the same year. The Tognazinni General Merchandise Store provided groceries, clothing and hardware for Edna's local residents and nearby ranchers. A dance ball occupied the upstairs, music was furnished by orchestras who traveled out from San Luis Obispo. The dance hall was occasionally used for Farm Bureau meetings. The store was also the location of the Edna Post Office for some years with Griseld Tognazinni as postmaster. With the development of the automobile allowing easier travel to San Luis Obispo, the store's business slowed down and finally the store ceased to operate in 1936, a year after the death of its founder. Between the years 1936-1948 the structure was rented out as a living quarters. In 1948, Dan Dougan moved in his antique collection, and to this date he has been living in and operating the Edna Antique Shop. The shop is built in early western style, with sheet metal siding, except for the lower front which is woodwork and glass. The front has a false built-up facia, hiding the sheet metal gable roof. On the south side there is a wooden stairway leading up to the dance hall. Inside, both stories have wood panel walls with ceilings and floors. The building stands on a concrete foundation.
