The jail was built in the late 1880's long before the city had a police department. It is believed Tom Whitely was City Marshall when it was built. In the early days it was used mainly as a drunk tank or for those persons awaiting transportation to the county seat in San Luis Obispo. The jail ceased to be used as such in the early 1930's. It is now used for storage by the Parks and Recreation Department. The jail is constructed of reinforced concrete, eight inches thick, poured in place in forms made of six-inch lumber. The roof is a shallow barrel vault of "cast-in-place" concrete. The heavy coating of tar on the roof has since sprouted a dense carpet of weeds. The floor is of poured concrete. The interior is ten feet nine inches by fourteen feet nine inches long and ten feet high and eleven feet high in the center. There are two twin bunk beds. The only additional facilities were a sink and a toilet with a wall-hung tank. The sole source of light and ventilation in the jail are three windows, twelve inches high with five number four re-bars placed vertically and five horizontally, backed by one-eighth-inch hardware cloth. The door is solid quarter-inch steel with no openings for light, air, or the passing of food. Sources: Fresno Bee.
