Its age is not known exactly because no one is allowed to see or talk to the owner because he is extremely ill. The owner is Fred H. Johnson. This same man and his wife own the bakery building on Higuera also. The structure is now rented by John W. Hanna and his wife who use it for their farm supply store. They have been there since 1958, after Mr. Johnson retired. Before being a farm supply store, the building was the site of a combination of three stores--"Agricultural Implements-Buggies and Wagons", "Union Hardware &. Plumbing Co.", and "McCormick Farm Machinery. Engines, Pumps, etc." This building was in existence when there were horses and buggies and no paved roads. The heavy equipment, such as tractors, with heavy cast iron wheels, were located on the top floor. The process by which the equipment was raised was by an elevator lifted by big pullies which were turned by hand. This elevator is still usable today. Located inside are two large heavy steel doors which took two or three men to push back for the deliveries of equipment. The back door is the only one used today. The building itself is a masonry construction. It has a tin roof with two skylights on top. The original hardwood floor supported by 2" x 18" rafters 16" o. c. spanning 20' still exists. On the lower level is a complete glass front held up by steel reinforcements, and on the upper level are six double-hung windows. The ceiling is about sixteen feet tall. On the lower level is a partly suspended balcony used as a storage area with offices underneath which appears to be part of the original construction. The upstairs contains two rooms which are not used much now. In one of the rooms is another heavy iron sliding door used for loading large equipment by means of a large pulley from Garden Alley below. The original lighting system was used at first by the Hannas, but later fluorescent lights were installed for better lighting. The original wiring is still used, however. The smaller one is used for supply deliveries. In the rear of the store is a two-story room 12' x 40' which was once used for storage. It has a stairway which upon each level has a platform for storage and then continues upward. On the exterior, white glaze brick is used for the first six feet in the front and the rest is faced with light tan fired bricks and trimmed out with Greek style trimming. The-sides and back of the building have been painted off-white. There are air vents made of 8" x 8" cast iron for the crawl space. Source: Mr. and Mrs. John W.
