The Los Berros School was one of these. It was built in 1891 for the children living on the ranches in the Los Berros Valley. There were no indoor facilities, electricity or piped water in the building. There was a stage across the rear of the room with a fireplace, which was used for heating. The Los Berros School was closed in 1944 and its students were sent to school in Arroyo Grande. The school sat empty for many years with its windows boarded up. In the last few years, it has been used by 'hippies' who left it in a deplorable condition, or so the lady who manages the nursery told me. A little over a year ago, the school was purchased by Steve Kercsak. The Los Berros School today sits against the bluffs of the Nipomo Mesa on a large tract of land on the corners of Pomeroy and Los Berros Roads. It is in its original state with a new coat of paint and a few minor repairs. Mr. Kercsak has remodeled the inside for use by his family. The stage across the rear has been removed along with the fireplace and the ceiling has been lowered by two feet. The grounds surrounding the school are used for bean fields and as a nursery for Mr. Kercsak's fuschias.
