It was to be the structure which would house the San Luis Obispo Gas and Electric Company. In 1908 the structure was bought by W. G. Proper. Three years later, the structure was purchased by the San Luis Obispo Gas and Electric Company. The interior was filled with machinery which provided San Luis Obispo with gas. Then the building and company were bought by Midland County Gas and Electric Company, which was a subsidiary of Pacific Gas and Electric. In 1959, Pacific Gas and Electric sold the building to W. 0. Hall, who later sold it to Davis Purlow. It was then that the structure became A & P Salvage. The structure is now owned by Davis and King Developers, who are thinking of turning the building into a bar. Plans have been drawn. However, trouble has risen because of the lack of a proper foundation. One of the most interesting characteristics of the building is the stone with which it is made. The stone is called Caen Stone, which came from Arroyo Grande. Another characteristic is the semi-circular window above the front door. There are no footings, the wall extends about one foot into the earth. The building has a dirt floor and presently a metal roof. When the structure was the San Luis Obispo Gas and Electric Company it had tall smokestacks which extended through the roof. To the side was a covered yard and a large gas storage tank.
