It was one of the best examples of classically inspired architecture in San Luis Obispo at that time. It served the county for 67 years. It was razed in 1940. The old San Luis Obispo County Courthouse was a three story building built out of brick. It had steep iron stairways. It was a success architecturally and it's cost totalled $40,000.00. The bricks that went into the old courthouse were manufactured by Ah Louis and his Chinese workmen who built a large part of the railroad tunnels through which rail transportation came to San Luis Obispo in 1894. Ah Louis established the flower seed industry in the county and built San Luis Obispo Chinatown. The old courthouse was located along Monterey Street. Higuera Street was a commercial district. The development of the city and county that followed the erection of the courthouse was speeded with the settlement of land titles in the decade. Some of the forgotten records have been found. Long forgotten records came to light to take their present rightful places as museum pieces. The record which was the oldest auditor's book kept by a Mexican, with entries in Spanish, was found by Willis Chase. When the American official took over this office in 1851, he continued the entries in the same book, but in English. This old courthouse was called "old time influence" in the good old days.
