S. 101 and is interested in California wine should not miss the Rotta Winery. To get there, one should take the Vineyard Drive exit off 101 to the Pesenti Winery, and then turn right up a gravel road to the Rotta Winery. The Rotta Winery is owned by the Rotta family and is operated by Mervin Rotta and Mrs. Romilda Rotta, his mother. The building is set in a beautiful atmosphere of vineyards and trees in a fairly hilly region. It is a very quiet, peaceful area. The original building appears to be constructed of large bricks and plaster stucco over that. Since the original construction, there have been additions made of brick, concrete, and wood including a very interesting sales room made from an old 7000-gallon redwood wine cask. In 1856, a Frenchman by the name of Adolf Siot founded the original winery. He ran a simple operation with only three casks. In 1907 Siot sold the winery to Rotta, In 1927, Mrs. Romilda Rotta came to Templeton. Since then the Rotta Winery has been in full operation. For many years, the only customers the winery had were in Santa Barbara and people visiting the winery. Just recently they have been stocking wine at the Hawthorne Market, Gus's Grocery and other stores in San Luis Obispo. Mrs. Rotta has been greeting visitors and customer s at the winery for the past 40 years. With the increased business over the last few years, the winery has more than doubled in size. It is interesting to note that the wine here is fermented in casks and then bottled rather than fermented in bottles. It seems to be mere efficient this way. This explains the cheap appearance in screw cap bottles, but rest assured the content is quite excellent.
