In 1878, whaling was discontinued and Hearst constructed a new pier and warehouse inside San Simeon Bay and a new village was started. The new owner, Leopold Frankl moved the store building on skid pulled by horses, to its present location across from the warehouse. Frankl was in charge of the wharf and later assumed the duties of postmaster. In 1900 the store was sold to the American Exploration and Development Company of New Jersey, then to the developers of the Pine Mountain Quicksilver Mine, who sold it to L. V. Thorndyke in 1904. Manuel Sebastian Sr. acquired the general store in 1914 and sold it in 1948 to his son Joseph C. Sebastian, the present owner. Sebastian's General Store, State Historical Landmark No. 726, is very much a part of the history of San Simeon. It has seen the days of the Spanish Dons and whalers, fishing boats and abalone divers, miners and local ranchers including W. R. Hearst, his family, friends and associates. Today, along with the local populace, it serves the many sportsmen, vacationers and sightseers, who flock to the area. Sources: Story of San Luis Obispo County.
