JOSEPHS CHURCH History and Description: St. Josephs was a two-story structure in downtown Cayucos. The second story of this light frame building was a small loft. The first floor is made up of two basic spaces; the worship space. 1,980 square feet and the rectory, 364 square feet. The church was white, balanced perfectly and surrounded by trees. The trees were removed at a later time and the lot was covered with asphalt to provide a parking lot. St. Josephs of Cayucos was built between 1894-1895 by a contractor, Manuel Dughi, who submitted a low bid of $600. The land the church sits on is in the heart of the town and was donated by Captain James Cass. The first priests traveled to Cayucos from San Luis Obispo. The first priest of St. Josephs was Father Wanner. The church was a wooden structure and was unheated until 1940 when an oil heater was added. The lighting was a kerosene lamp until 1945 when electricity was added. The church was vacated in favor of a new church built in 1950. The last priest to St. Josephs was Father Cooney. The church burned down September 30, 1970. Sources: Mrs. William Poletti Father Cornelius Sweeney Additional Comments: Extracted from Discovering San Luis Obispo County by Carleton M.
