It was built sometime around 1800 by the Chumash Indians from the mission and, as its name implies, was constructed of adobe brick. The building was erected for the purpose of storing grain for the mission. The site is adjacent to 101 Freeway immediately to the south with Stenner Creek to the north. Originally the deed to the adobe and its surrounding property was given by the City of San Luis Obispo to Yisidro Valderama. This deed was known as a "squatters deed" and was issued in 1860. From Valderama the property was purchased by S. W. Swinnerton for whom the adobe is named. The Swinnerton family converted the old grainery into a residence and covered the exterior with clapboard. The property remained in the Swinnerton family until comparatively recently, when it was sold to Mr. Donald Gallock, who considered developing the site into offices, artist studios, and an art gallery. However, the building has since been destroyed by fire and ruins are all that remain.
