J. Clarke (1928) T. J. BRODERICK Among those who by their business activities have contributed immeasurably to the growth and development of San Mateo county, specific mention should be made of T. J. Broderick, of Burlingame, who has gained wide recognition as a competent and trustworthy building contractor. Mr. Broderick was born in County Kerry, Ireland, on the 29th of October, 1883, and was there reared and educated, attending school to the age of fifteen years. He was then apprenticed to the carpenter trade, at which he was employed six years, and in June, 1904, he emigrated to the United States, arriving in San Francisco with a cash capital of ten dollars and no tools. He was fortunate in at once securing employment on the erection of a building at Third and Mission streets, at a wage of four dollars a day, his employers being Robinson & Gillispie. Feeling the need of a more thorough education, he attended night school, where he studied drawing and arithmetic. He also took a three-year course at the Humboldt school, where he made rapid advancement, and a course in the Mission high school. In 1908 Mr. Broderick worked on the Ferry building and then, going to Sonoma county, served as foreman of construction on the building of seven concrete and brick buildings at the State Home for the Feeble Minded at Eldridge, in the Valley of the Moon. Later he worked for Mahoney Brothers in the erection of the New Palace Hotel, and in 1915 came to San Mateo county and engaged in the contracting business on his own account. He erected the James Phelan home at Saratoga and twelve residences for the Irving Realty Company, and in the following year built his own home in Burlingame. In 1918 he formed a partnership with E. Mayes, under the firm name of Broderick & Mayes, and they were very successful, having erected over two hundred homes in this locality, as well as many other important structures. Mr. Broderick has built the Allen dry goods store, the J. E. Casey garage, the Brick warehouse, the Hitchcock home and others, and also built ten apartment houses of his own. Since 1920 Mr. Broderick has been alone in business and has continued his operations very successfully, being regarded as one of the leading contractors of this community. Mr. Broderick was united in marriage to Miss Julia Walsh, who is a native of Ireland, and they are the parents of five children, Thomas, Emmett, Andrew, John and Robert. Mr. Broderick is a communicant of the Roman Catholic church and is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Exchange Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He is entitled to great credit for what he has accomplished since coming to this country, his success being due entirely to his own determination and persistence along well directed lines, combined with sound judgment and correct principles.
