COLEBERD Widely recognized as an able and astute lawyer, commanding a large practice and rendering effective service as city attorney, no member of the legal profession in South San Francisco stands higher in public esteem than does J. W. Coleberd, whose offices are in the South San Francisco Bank building. Mr. Coleberd was born in Des Moines, Iowa, October 13, 1876, and was given the advantage of an unusually thorough education. After completing a course in the public schools of Polk county and Des Moines, he attended successively Highland Park College and Drake University, at Des Moines; Wooster University, at Wooster, Ohio; the University of Berlin, Germany; and the University of Chicago. For a time he was engaged in educational work and served as superintendent of schools at South Whitley, Indiana, and as principal of the high schools at Marquette, Michigan, and Garrett, Indiana. After his graduation from the University of Chicago he was admitted to practice law in Indiana. In 1911 Mr. Coleberd came to South San Francisco and again engaged in the practice of law, in which he has continued to the present time and in which he has gained an enviable reputation for his uniform success both as a trial lawyer and as an office counselor. As city attorney he has carefully safeguarded the interests of the municipality and is regarded as one of the strongest members of the city administration. Mr. Coleberd was united in marriage, June 18, 1912, to Miss Ada B. Mountz, a native of Indiana, and they are the parents of two daughters, Helen and Frances. Mr. Coleberd is a member of the Masonic fraternity and has attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. He also belongs to the South San Francisco Exchange Club and is a member of the San Mateo county law library board. He has shown a most effective interest in all matters affecting the general welfare and the progress of his community and is recognized as one of the county's ablest and most public-spirited citizens.
