J. Clarke (1928) CLARENCE S. CRARY One of the well known figures in banking circles in central California is Clarence S. Crary, vice president and manager of the American Trust Company at Burlingame, an institution which, under his able direction, has enjoyed a splendid growth in popularity and in volume of business and is now one of the most important and influential financial institutions of San Mateo county. Mr. Crary was born in Boone, Iowa, on the 30th of March, 1879, and received his education in the public schools, in Grinnell College of Iowa, and in Leland Stanford University, from which he was graduated in 1903. He was first employed as assistant clerk of the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, where he remained until shortly prior to the earthquake of 1906, when he entered the real estate business in association with Bovee, Toy & Company, of that city. In 1906 he became cashier of the Mayfield Bank, where he remained until 1908, after which for about one year he was assistant cashier of the Fillmore street branch of the Merchants National Bank of San Francisco, from which he was promoted to the position of receiving teller of the main bank on Market street. About that time Clinton E. Worden, of the First National Bank of San Francisco, was establishing banks in the oil fields of this state and invited Mr. Crary to assist him. This string of banks included those at Maricopa, Taft, Wasco, Bakersfield and Richmond, and during the ensuing months Mr. Crary had charge of the erection of bank buildings at these places. In addition to assisting in the organization of the banks, he served as assistant cashier of the First National Bank of Maricopa, after which he helped to organize the First National Bank of Taft, of which he became cashier, and from there, in 1913, he came to Burlingame, where he became cashier of the Bank of Burlingame and later was made president, which position he held until it was taken over by the American Trust Company, since which time he has served as vice president and manager. Through the years he has devoted his time indefatigably to the interests of this institution and its growth and success are largely due to his individual efforts. Mr. Crary is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Delta Tau Delta college fraternity of Stanford University. He also belongs to the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce, of which he was treasurer and director. A man of great energy and business capacity, he has long been regarded as one of Burlingame's leading men of affairs and has been effective in his efforts to advance the best interests of the city. Personally of cordial and unaffected manner, he enjoys marked popularity in the circles in which he moves.
