J. Clarke (1928) A. H. DITTMANN Technical ability, persistent industry and grim determination have been the elements which have contributed to the fine measure of prosperity which A. H. Dittmann enjoys, and he is regarded as one of Burlingame's most progressive and dependable business men. He was born in San Francisco, California, on the 14th of December, 1887, and secured his education in the public schools of that city. He learned the plumbing trade with L. Huffsmith, on Golden Gate avenue, prior to the great fire of 1906, and was afterward employed by W. P. Goss and J. L. Bowen. In 1916 Mr. Dittmann came to Burlingame and for several years was associated with L. A. Stark and Fred Snook, and in 1922 he engaged in the plumbing business here on his own account, establishing the pioneer plumbing shop on Broadway. He had little capital, but soon demonstrated his thorough knowledge of the business and the soundness of his methods, and from that small beginning he steadily advanced until today he is one of the leading plumbers of this section of the county. Increasing business demanded larger quarters, and on January 1, 1927, he moved into his own fine building on California drive, where he has a well equipped shop and is prepared to take care of anything in his line of work. As a contractor he has installed the plumbing in many of the finest homes in the Hillsboro district, including the Crocker, Samuel Knight, R. Onsby, F. Schwabacher, R. L. Coleman, R. Welch and Mrs. Merrill residences, and has done the plumbing for a number of the leading contractors in this locality. He keeps six men employed and commands his full share of the plumbing business of the community. Mr. Dittmann was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Olsen, who is a native of Sweden, and they are the parents of two children, Alice and Arthur. Mr. Dittmann is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in which he has attained the degrees of the Scottish Rite, and belongs to the Sciots and the Native Sons of the Golden West. While his business makes heavy demands on his time, he has not been unmindful of his obligations to the community and gives his support to projects for the betterment of the public welfare. Because of his fine business record and excellent personal qualities, he has won a high place in public esteem and is regarded as one of Burlingame's best citizens.
