J. Clarke (1928) ROBERT NELSON FAULKNER Robert Nelson Faulkner, who has back of him an exceptionally fine record as an instructor and principal of the Burlingame high school, possesses to a marked degree the essential qualifications of a successful educator, not the least of which is a sincere enthusiasm for his work. His services in the Burlingame school have been outstanding in their results and are duly recognized and appreciated throughout the community. Mr. Faulkner was born in Junction City, Geary county, Kansas, on the 4th of September, 1885, and is a son of Thomas Jefferson and Amelia (Pritchett) Faulkner. In young manhood the father enlisted in the Union army, serving through the Civil war, and afterward, remaining in the regular army, saw active service under General Custer. At the time of the latter's tragic death, with his troops, at the Little Big Horn river in 1876, Mr. Faulkner was at home on leave of absence, and thus escaped the fate of his comrades. He became a pioneer settler in Kansas, where he lived until 1895, when he and his wife came to California, and some time later went to Oregon, where the father's death occurred in 1926. Robert N. Faulkner received his elementary education in the public and high schools of Arroyo Grande, California, after which he entered the law school of George Washington University, at Washington, D. C, and was graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws. Returning to California in 1906, he was about to engage in the practice of his profession in San Francisco, when the earthquake and fire of that year caused him to change his plans, and he accepted a position as instructor in a business college. In 1909 Mr. Faulkner came to Burlingame as an instructor in the high school and for the past four years has been principal of the high school. Under his supervision the school has become noted for efficiency and by his earnest and effective methods Mr. Faulkner has gained recognition as a capable educator. Mr. Faulkner was united in marriage to Miss Helen Searight, who prior to her marriage was also a teacher in the Burlingame high school. They are the parents of a son, Bobby, and by a former marriage, Mr. Faulkner has a son, Nelson. In his political views, he is a republican and is a member of the San Mateo Lodge, A. F. & A. M.; the Scottish Rite Consistory, in which he has received the fourteenth degree; San Mateo Lodge, No. 1112, B. P. 0. E.; and the Rotary Club of Burlingame. During the World war he enlisted for service and was sent to the officers' training camp at the Presidio, San Francisco, where he was commissioned a major and detailed to give military instruction in high schools. Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner are very fond of outdoor life, mountain climbing being their favorite diversion, in the course of which they have ascended some difficult peaks. Mr. Faulkner has shown a deep interest in all matters affecting the welfare of his community and readily gives his support and influence to such measures as are calculated to be for the general good of the people, earning a reputation as one of the leading and influential citizens of his section of the county.
