J. Clarke (1928) EDWARD FRANCIS FITZPATRICK Endowed with a keen intellect, strong analytical powers and a capacity for sustained effort, Edward Francis Fitzpatrick steadily advanced in his chosen vocation and enjoyed an enviable reputation as a lawyer and jurist. He was a man of varied talents and achieved prominence as an agriculturist, in the field of finance and in the political arena. He was a member of one of the pioneer families of California and spent practically his entire life in Redwood City. Judge Fitzpatrick was born November 28, 1858, in Milburn, Essex county, New Jersey, and in 1868 came to Redwood City with his mother. His father had preceded them to California and became well known throughout San Mateo county owing to his activities in connection with the hotel business. After the completion of his high school course Edward F. Fitzpatrick entered St. Mary's College, at that time located on the Mission road in San Francisco, and was graduated with the class of 1877, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts. On his return to Redwood City he began the study of law in the office of Harvey Kincaid and in 1880 was admitted to the bar by the supreme court of California. He was thorough and painstaking in the preparation of his cases and his legal acumen soon won recognition. In 1889 he was appointed by Governor Waterman to complete the unexpired term of E. F. Head, superior judge of San Mateo county, and spent one year on the bench. He met every requirement of the office and the justice of his decisions proved his moral worth. Judge Fitzpatrick was long an influential factor in California politics. He was a member of the state central committee of the republican party and secretary of the county central committee. An astute financier, he was made chairman of the advisory board of the local branch of the Bank of Italy, and was one of the founders of the Commercial Bank of Redwood City. He was a scientific farmer and owned the old Byrnes place, a ranch of eight hundred acres, situated in the mountain district of San Mateo county. He was able to scatter his energies without lessening their force, and success crowned all of his undertakings. Judge Fitzpatrick was genial, sincere and unaffected, ever considerate of the rights and privileges of others and quick to recognize and appreciate true worth. He maintained the dignity and honor of his profession, and his death on April 19, 1926, was mourned throughout the county. In 1886 Judge Fitzpatrick married Mary A. O'Connell, a native of San Mateo county, and a stepdaughter of John Monohan of Menlo Park, California. Judge and Mrs. Fitzpatrick became the parents of three children: Frank E., Joseph R. and Mrs. Mary J. Doyle. Joseph R. Fitzpatrick was born December 14, 1896, in Redwood City and worthily follows in the professional footsteps of his father. He served in the United States Navy during the World war and afterward enrolled as a student in Santa Clara College, from which he was graduated in 1922 with the degree of LL.B. On the 1st of May, 1926, he formed a partnership with A. Kincaid, becoming the junior member of the firm, which is accorded a large and important clientele. Mr. Fitzpatrick belongs to the San Mateo Lodge of Elks, and that he is a young man of substantial worth is indicated by the high place which he holds in the esteem of his fellow citizens.
