J. Clarke (1928) ALFRED F. GROHNERT The pioneer sheet metal concern in Burlingame is that of Alfred F. Grohnert, who operates under the name of the Burlingame Sheet Metal & Machine Works, and who during the twenty years that he has been a representative of industrial activity here, has done the sheet metal work on the majority of the better class of buildings and homes over a large radius of surrounding country. Mr. Grohnert was born near Berlin, Germany, and when a babe in arms was brought to the United States by his parents, who first located in Saginaw, Michigan, but later went to Grand Rapids, that state. There he secured a good education in the public schools and afterward learned the trade of a sheet metal worker. In 1903 he went to Pasadena, California, where he worked for Munger & Munger, the Dunn Company and the Long Beach Hardware Company. In 1906 he removed to San Francisco, where he spent about a year with Joseph Cronan, who operated sheet metal works, and in 1907 came to Burlingame, where he engaged in business on his own account, being the first in that line of work here, and his first shop was in a barn. Increasing business demanding more room, he moved to a building on Lorton avenue, from which he went to Burlingame avenue, and finally came to his present excellent building, which he owns, at 108 California street. From the beginning the business has enjoyed a steady and continuous growth and he has done some of the best work to be found in this locality, as he employs none but expert workmen and is insistent upon high class work on every job. Among his many contracts in this vicinity were the White Tile Front building, the Bourne building, the Portola Hotel, the Post Office block, the Lorton block, the first theater built here, the Oscar Cooper and D. T. Murphy residences, the Reddington house, the Polo clubhouse, homes in the Lyon and Hoag tracts, the Cole and Francis Caroline residences, the Roman Catholic church, and the Oak Grove and Howard Avenue schools. A progressive and wide-awake gentleman, he has left a deep impress on the business circles of the community and his fair methods have earned for him the confidence of all who have dealt with him. Mr. Grohnert is a member of Burlingame Lodge, No. 400, A. F. & A. M.; San Francisco Consistory, A. A. S. R.; Islam Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., of San Francisco, and the Sciots. Genial and unassuming in manner, he has won an enviable place in public esteem, and his friends are in number as his acquaintances.
