J. Clarke (1928) CHARLE HAMMER Among the skilled builders and successful contractors of San Mateo county, none takes precedence over Charle Hammer, of Burlingame, who has through his professional activities contributed in a very definite degree to the upbuilding and development of his locality. He was born on his father's farm in Sweden on the 19th of December, 1881, and was reared and educated in that country. In 1901 he came to the United States, locating in San Francisco, California, where he learned the carpenter's trade under Ira W. Coleburn. In 1906 he entered the employ of Ward & Goodwin, builders of hotels and apartment houses, remaining with that concern for eight years, and then went to work for the Walker Construction Company. During his five years' connection with that firm he worked on a number of important building operations, serving as a foreman on the construction of the Hotel Oakland, at Oakland, one of the best hotel buildings in the state. He was with Munson Brothers as a straw boss on the construction of the new city hall in San Francisco, which is conceded to be one of the finest public buildings in California. During the entire period of this country's participation in the World war, Mr. Hammer was employed in the building of furniture on the United States destroyers in the Union Iron Works, and about eight years ago he came to Burlingame and formed a partnership with Hugo M. Hultberg, under the firm name of Hammer & Hultberg. They engaged in the building and selling of fine homes, ranging in price from eight to twenty-three thousand dollars, and did a large volume of business in that line until about two years ago, when the partnership was dissolved. Since then Mr. Hammer has been operating alone, not only building and selling houses, but also contracting, in both of which lines he is meeting with very satisfactory success. He sold homes to W. J. French, Mr. Hollingshead, Mr. Woodish and Charles I. Dix, and erected by contract the residences of W. Johnson, Peter Logan, Dudley Poor, H. Frarick, Charles Acker and Captain Hubbenette. On April 15, 1903, in San Francisco, Mr. Hammer was united in marriage to Miss Freda Sterner, who is a native of Sweden, and they are the parents of two children, Ethel, nineteen years of age, and Verna, eight years old. Mr. Hammer is a member of Burlingame Lodge, No. 400, A. F. & A. M.; has received the thirty-second degree in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and belongs to the Sciots. He is a member of the board of directors of, and serves as appraiser for, the Burlingame Building and Loan Association. A man of sound business judgment, great energy and absolute fairness in all of his dealings, he has long commanded the confidence of the people of his community, and is regarded as one of its representative men.
