J. Clarke (1928) CHARLES N. KIRKBRIDE In the forefront of the active and successful lawyers of San Mateo county stands Charles N. Kirkbride, who maintains offices in San Francisco and San Mateo and whose record during more than thirty years of professional work in which he has been engaged has stamped him as a lawyer of marked ability. Mr. Kirkbride was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on the 15th of November, 1868, and is a son of Rev. Charles H. and Louise (Holloway) Kirkbride, the former born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, January 11, 1838, and the latter in South Bend, Indiana. The father is deceased and is survived by his widow. The Kirkbride family is of early Scotch origin, the ancestry being traced back to 1300, in which year Sir Richard de Kirkbride distinguished himself in the battle of Caerleverock, on the Scotch border. The progenitor of the family in America was Joseph Kirkbride, who came to this country in 1680 and in the following year entered the employ of William Penn. Charles N. Kirkbride secured his elementary education in the public schools and entered the College of the Pacific, at San Jose, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy in 1887. He then turned his attention to the newspaper business, serving for two years as a reporter on the San Jose Mercury, when, in association with R. H. Jury, he founded the San Mateo Leader, and was later the publisher of the Times-Gazette at Redwood City. Having decided to devote his life to the legal profession, he entered the law school of Northwestern University, at Chicago, and was graduated, with the degree of Bachelor of Laws, in 1893. In the following year he located in San Mateo and engaged in the active practice of his profession. He has been associated with Joseph B. Gordon for many years under the firm name of Kirkbride & Gordon, which firm specializes in the law of special assessments and municipal corporations. He has been admitted to practice in the courts of Illinois, California, the United States district court at San Francisco and the United States supreme court. During all the years he has enjoyed a good practice, and is regarded as a reliable and dependable lawyer. On May 24, 1919, in Modesto, California, Mr. Kirkbride was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Goode, who was born and reared in Iowa, and they are the parents of three children, Bruce C, Harold E. and Elizabeth Louise. In his political views Mr. Kirkbride has always supported the republican party and has been interested in public affairs. He served for twenty-eight years as city attorney of San Mateo and for eighteen years was a member of the board of trustees of the San Mateo union high school, of which he was one of the founders. Mr. Kirkbride is a member of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, the San Francisco Sector of the Association of the Army of the United States, and San Mateo Post, No. 82, American Legion. He was one of the founders of the League of California Municipalities, of which he served one year as state president, and is a member of the board of trustees of the College of the Pacific, which is now located at Stockton. He maintains professional affiliation with the San Mateo County Bar Association, the San Francisco Bar Association, the California State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. His religious connection is with the First Methodist Episcopal church in San Mateo. In 1911 Mr. Kirkbride became a member of the California National Guard, in which he became captain of coast artillery, with which rank he entered the federal service on the entry of the United States into the World war. He graduated from the Field Artillery School of Fire, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in the sixth class, in 1918, and at the time of the Armistice was serving as coast defense ordnance officer. On being discharged he was recommended for promotion and since 1919 has held the rank of major in the Officers Reserve Corps. Mr. Kirkbride has shown a commendable interest in the material development of San Mateo and Burlingame and was one of the earliest owners of business structures on Burlingame avenue, having erected the first store building on that street, and being still interested in some of the best business blocks on the avenue. He has lived and labored to worthy ends and as one of the sterling citizens and representative professional men of his community is eminently worthy of specific mention in the annals of his county.
