J. Clarke (1928) FREDERICK D. LORTON Frederick D. Lorton, of Burlingame, stands in the front rank of the real estate and insurance men of San Mateo county, for he has not only attained a due measure of material prosperity, but is also numbered among those whose efforts have contributed to the growth and advancement of the community. Mr. Lorton was born in Athens, Clark county, Missouri, on the 25th of August, 1872, and is a son of William Austin and Hortense P. Lorton, of whom the former was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, October 28, 1840, and the latter in Athens, Clark county, Missouri, June 26, 1843. Mr. Lorton is descended from Scottish and English ancestry, the family having been established in Virginia in colonial days. From that state they went to Kentucky, and later to Illinois. William A. Lorton was a veteran of the Civil war, having enlisted in the Twenty-ninth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded in the battle of Shiloh. His company was commanded by Captain, afterwards General, John A. Logan, and the division commander was General Lew Wallace. Frederick D. Lorton secured his early education in the public schools of Missouri and Iowa, and supplemented this by a commercial course in the Orchard City Business College, at Burlington, Iowa, from which he was graduated in May, 1893. On coming to California he worked on the Black Hawk ranch, owned by Ansel M. Easton, now of North Burlingame, remaining in that place during 1891-2, when he returned to Iowa to attend business college. On again coming to California he entered the employ of H. T. Scott at the Union Iron Works, there remaining until June, 1905, when he came to Burlingame and in August of that year entered the real estate and insurance business, to which he is still devoting his attention. He has handled a large amount of city and country property in this section and probably has as thorough a knowledge of land conditions and values as any man in San Mateo county. He has been successful and now owns considerable real estate and a number of business blocks in Burlingame. He erected the first business building facing Burlingame avenue, it being located on the present site of the Hotel Burlingame, and in many ways he has shown a progressive spirit in affairs affecting the growth and prosperity of this locality. On June 11, 1902, at Palo Alto, California, Mr. Lorton was united in marriage to Miss Edith Estella Bartlett, who was born in Stanislaus county, this state, and is a daughter of Allen T. and Elizabeth J. (James) Bartlett, of whom the former was born in Maine and came to California in the early '50s, while the latter was born in Illinois and came to California by ox team in 1852. Both parents are buried at San Mateo. Mrs. Lorton is a charter member of the Burlingame Women's Club and is eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Politically Mr. Lorton is a republican and has always maintained a deep interest in public affairs. In 1900 he became a member of California Lodge, No. 1, A. F. & A. M., and in 1908 affiliated with Burlingame Lodge, of which he was a charter member, and which he served as master in 1910. He is also a member of California Chapter, No. 5, R. A. M., and San Mateo Pyramid, No. 25, Sciots. His religious connection is with the Methodist Episcopal church. A man of marked business ability, sturdy integrity and practical usefulness, loyal to the best interests of his community, he is well worthy the confidence and respect which are accorded him by his fellowmen.
