J. Clarke (1928) HENRY MAIER, SR. Among the influential and highly respected residents of Burlingame, none is held in greater esteem than Henry Maier, Sr., who has been a resident of this city continuously for twenty-five years, during which period he has ably sustained a reputation as an expert landscape gardener, many splendid examples of his work being in evidence throughout this section of the county. He was born in Germany on the 30th of March, 1862, and was reared and educated in that country, where his family had lived through many generations. In 1887 he emigrated to the United States, locating in San Francisco, where he lived until 1902, when he came to Burlingame. He has devoted his life to landscape gardening and his services have been in constant demand, his artistic taste and technical knowledge of the subject having long been recognized as being of a superior order. Since 1924 Mr. Maier has been head gardener of the grounds at Leland Stanford, Jr., University at Palo Alto, driving to and from his work every day. In San Francisco, in 1892, Mr. Maier was united in marriage to Miss Annie Hauser, who was born in Germany in 1870, and died March 3, 1917. To them were born three children: Mrs. J. W. Leggett, Henry C. and Herman L., all of whom reside in Burlingame. Mr. Maier is a member of Burlingame Lodge, A. F. & A. M.; the Peninsula bodies of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and San Mateo Lodge, B. P. O. E. His religious connection is with the First Methodist Episcopal church of this city. He has at all times shown a deep interest in the civic progress and welfare of Burlingame and is rendering effective service as a member of the board of grammar school trustees. Kindly and generous in disposition, straightforward and unaffected in manner, he enjoys a high place in the esteem of his fellowmen and is regarded as one of the best citizens of his community.
