J. Clarke (1928) MARTIN PETERSON Sweden has contributed to this country some of our best blood and we are indebted to it for many who have in very large measure furthered the progress and development of this country. One of the most progressive and enterprising business men of Burlingame, San Mateo county, is Martin Peterson, who has won here an enviable reputation as a capable and reliable contractor. Mr. Peterson was born in Sweden on the 20th of September, 1882, and was there reared and educated. In 1901, at the age of nineteen years, he came to the United States, landing at New York city with a cash capital of thirty dollars. He at once began to learn the carpenter trade, at which he was employed in that city and at Summit, New Jersey, until 1904, when he went to San Francisco. There he soon found employment and after the great fire of 1906 worked on the erection of a number of large buildings as superintendent of construction. In the meantime, feeling the need of better preparation for his life work, he attended the evening high school for three years, specializing in architectural drawing. In 1920 Mr. Peterson came to Burlingame and built two bungalows after his own designs, which immediately appealed to the tastes of home seekers and were soon sold, those who bought them being still pleased with their homes. Soon afterwards Mr. Peterson entered the hardwood floor contracting business, which he successfully carried on for a number of years, but has recently returned to the general contracting business, and in the past nine months has completed nine fine homes in this section of the county. Painstaking and thorough in everything that he undertakes, he employs none but expert workmen, with the result that he has won a well merited reputation for trustworthiness in all of his engagements and is now commanding all the work that he can do. He possesses to a marked degree those qualities which commend him to the good favor of his fellowmen and is deservedly popular among his acquaintances.
