C. Wolfe, Editor SCOTT, Henry T.: Chairman of the Board Pacific Telegraph & Telephone Company and Executive Officer of various interests. Born near Baltimore. Maryland in 1846, son of John Scott (a Quaker preacher and a strong supporter of the Union) and Elizabeth (Lettig) Scott. Paternal ancestors among early residents of Maryland, and the Scott home was deeded to family by Lord Baltimore. Educated in the public schools and Lamb's Academy, Baltimore, Maryland, and in 1867 came to California. First secured employment at Union Iron Works, and when in 1883 it was reorganized and incorporated, he became First Vice president, two years later was made President, a position he filled up to the time the corporation changed hands. During his control of Union Iron Works, developed from small concern to worldwide reputation, chiefly as a builder of battleships and cruisers for the United States Navy. Built the Oregon, Charleston, San Francisco and others. Mr. Scott was one of the original organizers of Panama-Pacific International Exposition Company, the directing organization. He was on the committee that went to Washington during the contest between the cities of New Orleans and San Francisco before Congress, which resulted in San Francisco being chosen as the site for that great exposition in 1915, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. He is Vice-president Mercantile National Bank, President Burlingame Land and Water Company. President St. Francis Hotel Company, Director Bank of Burlingame and Director Crocker Estate Company. Married Miss Elsie Horsley and has three children, W. Prescott, Harry H. and Mary Scott (now Mrs. Walter Martin). He is a member of the Pacific Union Club and Burlingame Country Club.
